Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand – a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.

Our large Information Services and Technology (IST) division at Transpower delivers and supports the infrastructure and applications that work with the grid, facilitate system and grid operations, and support our corporate processes and systems.  Our Data and Analytics teams work to accelerate data informed decision making across the business.  Find out more about what they do here: IT Careers

ICT Summer Interns are key to ensuring we have a pipeline of potential future software engineers and technologists with the experience, skills, and behaviours needed to succeed in early in career opportunities after completing their studies.

About the opportunity

Starting mid-November through to mid-February each year, you’ll join Transpower as a paid Summer Intern (earning a living wage). From day one, you’ll be given meaningful work and supported by a collaborative, professional, and knowledgeable team. You’ll gain a first-hand understanding of what it’s like to work with us, and where Transpower as New Zealand’s owner and operator of the National Grid, is going in the future.

You’ll benefit from support, coaching, and mentoring from our dedicated Early Careers Programme Lead, second-year Summer Interns, and a buddy from our extensive Young Professionals community. Together, they’ll help you settle in quickly and build valuable relationships across the business.

Based at our Head office Waikoukou in Wellington, you’ll have a phenomenal opportunity to experience Transpower, while also completing some of the Engineering hours required to graduate.  If you are joining us from another region, previous interns have successfully arranged group accommodation or stayed at Victoria University’s student halls, which are a short walk from our office.

Building positive relationships, learning on the job, and delivering outstanding work will give you a real advantage if you choose to apply for associate roles in software, ICT, or data and analytics - key areas supporting technology-enabled electricity transmission.

To be considered for our Summer Internship Programme, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate that you:

  • Are working towards a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering Science, or Data Science) with a cumulative GPA of 5.5 or higher. Please have your transcript ready to upload.
  • Have well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have a genuine interest working in ICT at Transpower, and how technology will enable the energy future.
  • Are studying at a New Zealand university and are a citizen, resident, or hold full eligibility to work in New Zealand.

At a conversational interview, we’ll be looking to further explore your critical thinking, curiosity, and the ability to work well with others.
