About the opportunity
Starting mid-November through to mid-February each year, you’ll join Transpower as a paid Summer Intern (earning a living wage). From day one, you’ll be given meaningful work and supported by a collaborative, professional, and knowledgeable team. You’ll gain a first-hand understanding of what it’s like to work with us, and where Transpower as New Zealand’s owner and operator of the National Grid, is going in the future.
You’ll benefit from support, coaching, and mentoring from our dedicated Early Careers Programme Lead, second-year Summer Interns, and a buddy from our extensive Young Professionals community. Together, they’ll help you settle in quickly and build valuable relationships across the business.
Based primarily in our Head office Waikoukou in Wellington (limited places are available in Christchurch and Otara Auckland), you’ll have a phenomenal opportunity to experience Transpower, while also completing some of the Engineering hours required to graduate. If you’re joining us from another region, previous interns have successfully arranged group accommodation or stayed at Victoria University’s student halls, which are a short walk from our office.
Building positive relationships, learning on the job, and delivering outstanding work will give you a real advantage if you choose to apply for our Graduate Programme. You could find yourself in areas such as:
- National Grid Assets
- Power Systems
- Operations Planning
- Real Time Systems Video
or other associate positions helping to shape the future of electricity transmission.
Get a glimpse into life at Transpower through our graduate ‘Day in the Life’ videos, and explore the wide range of career paths available via our Youtube channel ‘Careers at Transpower’.
To be considered for our Summer Internship Programme, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate that you:
- Are working towards a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical, Electrical and Electronic, Mechatronics, Maths/Physics, or Engineering Science) with a cumulative GPA of 5.5 or higher (please have your transcript ready to upload)
- Have well-developed written and verbal communication skills
- Have a genuine interest working at Transpower, and how electricity will enable the energy future
- Are studying at a New Zealand university and are a citizen, resident, or hold full eligibility to work in New Zealand
While studying Power Systems isn’t essential, is an advantage!
At a conversational interview, we’ll be looking to further explore your critical thinking, curiosity, and the ability to work well with others.
