What can I expect from the programme?

Our Graduate programme will give you an experience like no other working within our dynamic Institutiunal & Business Banking (IBB) COO and Risk, Compliance & Conduct teams. The Chief Operating Office is focused on improving the capabilities of everyone in IBB, as well as optimising the way we work. Whilst the IBB Risk, Compliance & Conduct team are focused on strengthening risk management and maturing risk culture in IBB, as we continue building a strong, safe, resilient business that our customers and communities can put their trust in.

In this programme you can expect to rotate your time between the COO and Risk, Compliance and Conduct teams to help you learn more about the various workstreams within IBB. These two teams are packed full of different roles, expertise and project experiences to enhance your overall learning and understanding of a strong risk culture and operating rythm.

Our current programme is based in Auckland and will run for approximately 12 months.  You’ll start with us as a permanent employee in February 2025 on an immersive orientation which will help grow your understanding of Westpac NZ along with the wider grad cohort.

Throughout the programme: 

We’ll provide loads of learning and support to help you make the most of the experience. You’ll receive lots of opportunities for learning and growth that will optimise your role performance and career progression. Consumer or Business banking Champions, leaders and mentors will support you during the programmeme experience. The programme is structured to help you identify your focus areas. Tailored training sessions build and strengthen your technical and soft skills - accelerating your personal and professional career development. 

  • Support and coaching with a buddy and mentor : You will receive a mentor who will provide you coaching and help you take charge of your development and career planning to help navigate life at Westpac.
  • Expect plenty of opportunities to get involved in grad life where you can build your networks and friendships with those you work with, including business leaders.
  • Expect to be able to give back. Join numerous communities, volunteering and sustainability initiatives rounding out your whole work life experience.

The day to day: 

  • Expect to contribute from day one and have an impact on the business
  • Build a thorough understanding and knowledge of risk and compliance
  • Support IBB to identify, capture, and report risk incidents
  • Identify coaching opportunities across IBB on risk management to uplift skills and knowledge
  • Deliver analysis and initiatives across IBB to drive continuous improvement, deliver business plans and operationalise IBB’s strategy.
  • Contribute to IBB strategy development
  • Leverages data to drive continuous improvement in areas such as productivity, quality, customer service, and sales.
  • You will gain exposure to a key project, based on a real business problem which you will propose and/or implement a solution and present to key stakeholders.

At the end of your programme, you’ll be supported to find a suitable role that matches your capabilities and interests within your business area.

To be eligible for our graduate programme you must be in your final year of study of a university degree or have graduated in the last 2 years; You also need to be a New Zealand or Australian Citizen or a New Zealand Resident when you apply.

If you have a drive to exercise your passion for Risk & Compliance and Business Banking, customer relationships and thrive within a team environment, we have you in our sights. We welcome graduates from Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Finance/Accounting, Legal or related disciplines who are passionate about helping customers succeed.

  • Experience and understanding of Agriculture within New Zealand
  • Ability to recognise areas of opportunity, to adapt and innovate and to drive productivity
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Customer-centric, a team-player who exhibits drive, resilience and high levels of personal integrity and professionalism
