MEET OUR GRADUATES

ANDREA FERNANDEZ
Strategy and Planning Analyst

Studied: Master of Commerce in Management, Bachelor of Commerce and Administration (majoring in marketing and management).

When did you start at Sovereign?
My first day was Monday, 24 November, 2014 – I’d just moved up from Wellington over the weekend so it was all very exciting!

What roles have you had since joining Sovereign?
My first role was Strategy and Planning Coordinator however my title and position description changed to mirror what I was actually doing on a day to day basis.

What do you love about working for Sovereign?
I love the physical environment – we have an awesome, open space building surrounded by green lawns. Smales Farm also put on free yoga every Tuesday which is awesome! The people are incredibly friendly and I have a fantastic team, everyone is incredibly supportive.

What have been your greatest insights and learnings from your time at Sovereign?
Attitude, character and curiosity are equally important to working hard and getting things done. Having a positive outlook can make a big difference particularly when in a high performing team with hard deadlines. Relationship building and stakeholder management are also really important skills that you don’t learn from university and I think the first place to start is really getting to know yourself in order to better understand others. I’ve recently been reading about Carol Dweck’s work on growth mindset – she also has a fantastic Ted Talk, it’s one to definitely check out!

How does Sovereign let you take charge of your career?
What resonates with me most is that I’m in an environment which continually challenges me and encourages me to learn – it makes what I do very meaningful and worthwhile.

What are your tips for other grads looking to join Sovereign?
Might be a bit of a cliché but I’m a massive believer in diversity of thinking and so my tip for grads looking to join Sovereign is to be yourself and make sure you bring your whole self to work (while being self-aware) because that’s how you’ll be able to add value to Sovereign. As a recent graduate, I strongly believe having little work experience is not a setback. If you’re curious, having little experience is a selling point because with each ‘expert’ a ‘junior’ is needed to play the naïve card in order to test boundaries.

EVAN COOPER
Actuarial Analyst

Studied: Bachelor of Science (majoring in physics) and Graduate Diploma (majoring in statistics)..

When did you start at Sovereign?
I started working at Sovereign part time from September 2015 during my studies and began full time as at November 2015.

What roles have you had since joining Sovereign?
As I have only been at Sovereign for a short time, the range of roles I’ve have is quite limited. I am currently working in the Business Partnership team as an actuary in training.

What do you love about working for Sovereign?
I love that I have been given the opportunity to learn from very skilled professionals who see mistakes for what they are, an opportunity to learn, and in kind, entrust me with freedoms and leniency in my job and studies that give me a crucial balance during the stressful early years of a trainee actuary.

What have been your greatest insights and learnings from your time at Sovereign?
The world is not a textbook; one must be open to having their ideas, even those rooted in seemingly conventional wisdom, to be challenged and often rightfully so. Some of the least exciting exercises are the most important. Version control so others can follow your work processes, checking work, layouts that are easy to read all seem like mundane practices when in reality they’re some of the most important skills as a graduate.

How does Sovereign let you take charge of your career?
As an actuarial analyst I have received a generous study package, including some paid study leave in the lead up to my actuarial examinations. I am surrounded by dozens of extremely knowledgeable professionals who are more than happy to share both their knowledge and wisdom and during my early years at Sovereign actuarial students rotate around the Business Partnership, Pricing and Financial/Investment departments allowing us to experience all facets of the actuarial profession and develop passions accordingly.

What are your tips for other grads looking to join Sovereign?
Apply for the right reasons, don’t take a job out of convenience, take every opportunity that presents itself, ask questions, be humble and learn. “A fool thinks himself to be wise, a wise man knows he is a fool”.

NATALIE NG
Reinsurance Support Analyst

Studied: Bachelor of Business at AUT (majoring in economics and finance).

When did you start at Sovereign?
March 21, 2016.

What roles have you had since joining Sovereign?
Intern: Analyst in Actuarial Team.

What do you love about working for Sovereign?
During my first few weeks working for Sovereign I immediately noticed the numerous opportunities they have for their staff. Sovereign looks after their staff so well, with flexible hours, fun social activities throughout the year, and of course, great people! Everyone looks out for each other which makes it a place where value is easily shared around the business. I love the office itself too – the open plan layout means that you get to see people from all over the business, and the revolving doors entrance and beautiful communal Atrium area set up WOWed me from day one.

What have been your greatest insights and learnings from your time at Sovereign?
For me, it’s been the exposure to how important communication is in the workplace, whether it’s between you and other team members, other departments or external stakeholders. People at Sovereign know that this is so important, as “Collaborate” is one of Sovereign’s key values. Along with that, it’s been the huge amount of knowledge that I’ve been able to absorb from my co-workers’ expertise of the industry. This is knowledge I’ll be able to keep with me wherever I go.

How does Sovereign let you take charge of your career?
Entering the corporate world fresh out of university with zero experience was definitely scary, but Sovereign was a great place to kick off my career. You’re set up with a mentor, a great team to work with, and the opportunities to network and learn are endless.

What are your tips for other grads looking to join Sovereign?
Apply! No matter what your background is, Sovereign has something to offer you. There’s plenty of opportunity to move around – it’s a large business and there’s bound to be a role here you’ll love

JAMES TSAI

When did you start at Sovereign?
May 2015.

JAMES TSAI
Technical Support Specialist

Studied: Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts (majoring in marketing, information systems and music).

When did you start at Sovereign?
May 2015.

What roles have you had since joining Sovereign?
My first role at Sovereign was a Customer Service Consultant role within the customer central department. Here, I was responsible for processing incoming service requests including liaising with internal and external stakeholders and delivered appropriate policy information support to Advisers, corporates, bancassurance and direct channels.

What do you love about working for Sovereign?
Sovereign realises the power of the people and the value of diversity, culture, ethnicity and experience - recognising that diversity makes us a stronger team and community. I have found it easy to fit in and enjoy everything I am involved in. Every day I get to work with various talented colleagues who look out for me and are really approachable.

What have been your greatest insights and learnings from your time at Sovereign?
The most important skill I have learnt at Sovereign is the significance of networking. I believe networking is the catalyst for success as it provides the most productive, most proficient and most enduring tactic in building strong connections. This essentially creates a community of people who support one another and provide emotional support in gaining insights to new tools, leaders, training and programs.

How does Sovereign let you take charge of your career?
Sovereign provides a range of development opportunities that create critical skills and experience in supporting what I love doing. I have always had a keen interest in marketing and video production. I have had the opportunity to work alongside executive leaders and managers creating internal marketing materials.

What are your tips for other grads looking to join Sovereign?
As a new graduate, fresh out of university, it can be quite overwhelming when starting your career in the financial services industry. Sovereign has supported me from day one and has given me their reassurance that they have genuinely invested in me and my personal development and learning. My tip: Dare to dream but also dare to ask. You’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.
