Jonty works in our Tax Service line. He joined the firm as an intern and recently commenced his graduate role.

I’ve just finished a project for a pair of the commercial property developers rebuilding Christchurch – working as the junior member of a five person team. I was in charge of the annual tax compliance work for the client’s 15 subsidiaries.

When you’re demolishing and rebuilding the tax implications are tricky. You’ve got insurance proceeds in play. What’s the most tax-efficient way to deal with that? What if the proceeds won’t be used until the next year? We came up with a plan to help the client deal with those issues, so they won’t have any surprises next year.

I also realised that some of the client’s smaller entities had been built around business ventures that had finished. Instead of simply rolling them forward year after year, they could simply be wound up – saving the client time and money.

I worked with EY’s Transaction Advisory Services team to get the liquidation process started and got advice from our Business Tax Advisory experts about what this would mean from a tax perspective. This is one of the great things about working at EY – being able to collaborate with these highly skilled specialists. I learnt so much!

I was also amazed at the networking opportunities I got from being part of this project – not just with the clients themselves, but with commercial property managers and bank managers. It really drove home how important it is to build and maintain these relationships to help your career.

As an EY graduate, you’ll enjoy early responsibility, rewarding challenges and exposure to a variety of businesses across a range of sectors. Assurance for large multinationals or emerging small businesses? Transaction advice for public private partnerships? Tax advice for organisations moving employees around the world? Managing risk for your clients in a rapidly changing environment? It’s up to you.

Assurance

Using market leading advanced data analytic tools, we look beyond the obvious to delve deeper into the underlying patterns and trends. We’re able to deliver powerful business insight to assist with defining a company’s financial performance and position, relating details to the big picture and applying our knowledge to get to the right answers and drive business performance. The broad business perspective you’ll develop in Assurance will serve as a foundation for any business career.

But assurance skills are not limited to audit or finance. Assurance professionals also help clients make informed decisions about environmental policies, governance and management systems and fraud investigation.

If you’re looking to fast-track your development as a business professional, develop relationships with key client personnel, have a questioning mind and enjoy challenging assumptions, this could be the ideal start to building a successful career with us.

Joining our Assurance practice will give you the opportunity to develop broad skills and gain experience in the areas below:

  • Audit and Accounting
  • Climate Change and Sustainability Services
  • Fraud Investigations & Dispute Services

Tax

Businesses today face an ever-growing, increasingly complex range of tax and regulatory change. Helping them navigate these difficult conditions requires a sound understanding of tax legislation, intellectual rigour and the ability to manage client relationships effectively.

Tax isn’t just about filing returns - you’ll have exposure to conducting strategic tax planning or structuring more tax efficient transactions. You’ll contribute to projects that have significant implications on the way clients manage their business. If you enjoy intellectual challenges and problem solving, you’ll find tax a challenging and rewarding environment.

As a tax professional, you can expect to use your research and analytical skills, apply yourself to stay on top of the law and acquire in-depth knowledge of clients’ businesses.

You might choose to start your tax career with us by acquiring generalist skills or by focusing on one of the following areas:

  • Business Tax Services
  • Financial Services
  • People Advisory Services
  • Indirect Tax
  • International Tax
  • Transaction Tax

Transaction Advisory Services

Our Transaction Advisory Services teams help businesses and government bodies make big decisions on how best to raise, invest, optimize and preserve their capital. Do they need to buy a company or merge with a competitor? Should they sell an underperforming or non-core business? Do they have the right business model and balance sheet?

Very soon you’ll get involved in highly strategic projects, helping companies large and small grow - working end to end on a transaction, from strategy to execution. This kind of exposure will help you to become a well-rounded corporate finance professional in no time. You’ll see first-hand how important transactions are conceived, crafted and negotiated.

In the process, you’ll develop valuable communication and analytical skills, gaining you a reputation as a trusted business advisor – by people on both sides of the transaction. We provide a full range of Transaction Advisory Services in both developed and emerging markets. Our Transaction Advisory Services include:

  • M&A Advisory
  • Restructuring
  • Real Estate Advisory Services

Do you know what it takes to build a better working world?
