My internship has provided plenty of on the job learning that I can apply to my studies with I’m back at university”

Own Your Summer

Taking your first steps in the industry can be daunting but it’s a chance to try out your skills and decide if working in a contracting business is right for you. The Downer Summer Intern Programme is a great way to try us out and we can see how well you fit with our business. We will get you involved in real-world experiences so you get the chance to apply your knowledge.

Making choices about your first job isn’t easy, so it’s important to take time during your internship to ask questions, observe the jobs done by our people and seek opportunities to explore what a career with us could look like. Downer has projects across New Zealand so we are looking for people who are agile, willing to move to projects where their skill set is needed and keen to face any challenge to gain the right experience to take their career forward.

Our most successful interns go on to join our Graduate Programme so we expect interns to get out there and demonstrate their capability. Interns need to use their initiative by seeking out learning opportunities and look for positive role models throughout the internship to help them grow.

We’re looking for Summer Interns who are ready to take ownership of their career and want to join Downer as a Young Professional.

We’re going to open our applications for our 2017 summer internship intake on 26 June 2017.

Havea

Havea started life at Downer as a summer intern and is currently working on the Chatham Islands.

I’ve learnt to be agile – when things don’t go to plan like traffic control hasn’t set up; excavators haven’t been delivered; or a member of the team is sick. Thinking on the fly is a must, if I need to jump on the tools – I will!

My biggest personal development challenge so far is having confidence. Having the confidence to take charge and make crucial calls; have challenging conversations with subcontractors and owning the planning side of things.  Even having the confidence to banter with the ‘bigwigs’ of the company. Being a graduate I’ve learnt that I’m not just there to observe and learn from others.  It’s very rewarding to step up.

Craig West, Young Executive of the Year, Deloitte Top 200

Craig started life with Downer as a summer intern!

Every part of what you touch in New Zealand today has been influenced by Downer, you will meet some great people, get exposure to some fantastic projects, and have some fun – so go ahead and own your future by applying to our Young Professionals Programme.”

Own Your Experience

Downer recognises hard work and great results.  Every year, Managers across Downer nominate Graduates for awards who have demonstrated excellence in Leadership, Project Management and Technical Solutions.  We encourage our future leaders to be the best in everything they do and we enjoy celebrating their success.

Here’s what our 2014 winners had to say about their experience at Downer:

“I’m based in Porirua, working for the Infrastructure Services team. I’m working on a variety of local and national projects requiring technical/design input, e.g. retaining walls post flooding on the Great Barrier Island. The big challenge for me is connecting with people I wouldn’t normally come across, and trying to get their full buy in and enthusiasm.” - Michelle, Young Professional Award Winner 2014.

“The toughest challenge I have faced so far is transitioning from the 'young work mate' to the Manager, especially earning the respect of the elders who are double/triple my age. It took lots of courage to speak up when things are against Downer values and yet at the same time maintaining healthy relationships. Being able to show the team I am on their side and earning their respect and vice versa slowly allowed us to really progress into a team.  Receiving this award has really boosted my motivation to further up-skill myself and team. There is always room for us to get better!” - Jun Tack Lee Young Professional Award Winner 2014.

“I’m learning as I work and to be involved in such an interesting project as my first job has been awesome. Managing and balancing the needs of the engineer and the subcontractors on site has been a big challenge. When arriving on the Rangitoto Wharf project, some of the safety, quality and environmental procedures on site weren’t up to our standards. I had to work hard over the first few months to bring this up to the standard Downer expects. I feel privileged to have had great people working around me who have helped me in my career so far with Downer.” - Brendon Pickerill, Graduate Site Engineer

Own Your Growth

The Downer Graduate Programme ensures that you acquire the experience needed to succeed in the industry. It’s 3 years in duration, and it brings Washington Accord degree-level engineers and other specialisations, such as accountants and surveyors into Downer.

Once on board as a Downer Graduate you’ll become well embedded with the team and are a vital member of our business. Our graduate programme is one where you are supported throughout the first few years of your career.

Some of the elements the programme includes are:

Rotations through the business
We aim to develop well rounded, highly skilled professionals by exposing you to the wider business before you specialise in one area.

Dedicated Mentor Programme
Downer has an established network of mentors across the country. As a Graduate who joins Downer you will be partnered with an experienced colleague who has time to meet with you on a regular basis to help you set future career goals and find your way as a graduate.

Young Professionals Conference
Every year we invite Graduates to participate in the Young Professionals Conference. This is a two day event that incorporates professional development, team building, networking and technical updates. Our last conference focused on the customer and the role Graduates play in developing smarter customer relationships.

Engineering Forums
We believe professional registration is important and encourage our graduates to become Chartered Professional Engineers therefore we hold forums to aid you in getting there. Forums are designed for our graduates to bring their portfolios of evidence for review and receive feedback and guidance from IPENZ recognised assessors on their paperwork. Managers are also encouraged to attend and provide support to the wider Young Professionals network. They’re a mix of education, informal networking and plenty of pizza!

VSA (Voluntary Services Abroad)
As a Downer Graduate you may get the opportunity to travel, by working on one of our Pacific projects or contributing to our VSA partnership in the Solomon Islands.

“I believe the strength of the Downer Graduate programme is that it presents graduates with the opportunity to have exposure to a wide array of work experience to grow your core understanding of the construction industry.”- George McGregor, Site Engineer.

In 2014, Graduate Engineer George McGregor, went to the Solomon Islands following a cyclone that wiped out major infrastructure in the region. Working as part of an integrated Downer team, George was the Site Engineer responsible for rebuilding the Mataniko Bridge in Honiara working closely with the Solomon Islands Government and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

KELSEY'S GRADUATE STORY

Kelsey’s first contact with Downer was at the Auckland University Engineering Careers Fair. When applying for graduate roles, Kelsey was particularly interested in infrastructure services which is a big part of Downer’s business.

“I’m currently on rotation between the pavement design team and pavement construction department. I’ve had the opportunity to assist with design work for various urban roads around Auckland, and some rural projects too. I’ve designed two full urban arterial road rehabilitations in South Auckland. It was a really great experience to be responsible for a complete road rehabilitation design, right from investigation to the design report.”
