The Clemenger Group Talent Programme

Everyone says it, but we know it’s true. Our people really are our competitive difference. So we are constantly on the lookout for smart, savvy and curious individuals. That’s why we launched the Clemenger Group Graduate Programme back in 2010. This year the search is on again.

If you’re passionate, creative and driven to make your mark in the world of marketing communications, then we’d love to hear from you for our 2018 Graduate Programme intake.

We are looking for people with curious minds, who want to know about their world, what’s trending, what’s new; what’s important, what makes it tick. People who turn left when others turn right. Yes, you need a degree, but don’t let it define you.

You can land a place on our graduate programme if you are responsible, have initiative, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a good dollop of resilience. Show us you’re a creative problem solver, a thinker or a do’er with the right attitude and you’ll have us hooked.

Our desire is to grow future leaders who have a comprehensive understanding of all the different aspects of marketing communications.

Applications open 15th May and close 19th June 2017.

What makes a BBDO Person?

  1. They make the work better
  2. They present well
  3. They are radiators not drains
  4. They have a healthy paranoia
  5. They are closers
  6. They pick themselves up fast after being knocked down
  7. They raise hands rather than point fingers
  8. They are “we” not “me”
  9. They are loved (not just respected) by their clients
  10. They do the right thing

 Laura Holyoake (2015 graduate)

In my role as a Junior ‘Suit’ I have experienced so much already at .99 and Colenso BBDO. Coming onto the Mazda team I got to oversee the launch of the CX-3, with everything coming together from a suiting, creative, planning, digital, and production side. Work with clients such as Fonterra provided insight into the launch of Anchor Greek and the Salted Caramel Trumpet, getting amongst Kapiti cheese and ice cream shoots also. Other work has ranged from hanging with cute kids on Pumpkin Patch shoots, delivering some of the new ‘reduce speed dial’ cars for Volkswagen to lucky families, observing voiceovers for New World, shoots for the launch of the Pedigree Lost & Found App, and seeing the creation of campaign ideas for Frucor including Pepsi and Mountain Dew.

Alex Smith (2014 graduate – Account Executive)

I’ve always had a passion for brands ever since I used to watch my idols on the sports field clad in branded apparel and equipment. Working on the BNZ account has enabled me to merge my passion for marketing with my studies in financing and business strategy. Day-to-day work as an Account Executive means that you are constantly working with a vast range of highly creative people, which easily inspires and motivates you to better yourself as a young suit. The odd late night here and there is easily overcome by the culture that exists within all the agencies under the Clemenger Group umbrella, you won’t need better work stories!

Carmen McDougall (2014 Graduate – Account Executive)

I studied at the University of Auckland, where I completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing and Management. Since the age of fifteen I have had my heart set on being a part of the advertising industry. When you see something on television, in the street, or online that you have played a part in creating it is particularly gratifying. You can see the work you have spent countless hours on, not only that, others can see what you have produced and appreciate what it is you have achieved. The Clemenger Graduate Programme has been one adventure after the other. I’ve been an extra in a Burger King commercial, met Tower’s lighthouse keeper and had the opportunity to work with some of the industry’s most talented people. While that sounds pretty sweet, it’s also a lot of hard work. The hours you can put in, the tough deadlines and the odd missed deadline, are all things you have to learn to deal with. But at the end of the day, everything always works out! Never give up on your dream, and if it is to be a part of the advertising agency world then make it happen because it is awesome!

Bobby Innes (2014 graduate – Production)

I studied a BA in Film & Media and a BCom in Marketing Management at Otago University. During my studies, I realised that I was particularly interested in the digital aspect of advertising and decided to do an additional certificate in web design. In an industry that thrives on creativity and innovation - digital is where some of the most cutting edge and exciting work is being done. The initial three-month rotation of the Clemenger Group agencies was a brilliant way to get a broad overview of the layers that make up the advertising industry, and understand the role each agency has within the group.

Will Smith (2014 graduate – Account Executive)

At university my studies covered history, political studies, economics and marketing, not exactly a traditional combination. On rotation for the Clemenger Graduate Programme however, I quickly discovered that it takes all types to run a successful agency, everyone’s background being wonderfully varied. The rotation period through all the agencies is a truly unique opportunity. You will be starting your career in advertising with a great insight into how thwill-smithe different agencies work, and how they relate to each other.

Lucy Collins (2013 graduate – Production)

I work as a production coordinator producing TVCs (television ads) for lots of different brands, from FMCG to health, beauty and pharamaceutical. My job is to organise the shoots, help with casting talent, finding locations and booking presenters and crew plus on the day I have to make sure everything is running smoothly, on time and that the client has got everything they want. I also get to work a lot with media and it’s been a fantastic opportunity for me coming through the graduate programme. I’m the only grad doing this particular role at this agency, but I do get to interact a lot with the other grads because I did that 3-month rotation and with not having a background in advertising, it gave me more knowledge and a chance to meet different inspiration people.

Sophie Petley (2013 graduate – Social Media)

Flying up to the assessment day I had this preconceived idea that it was going to be terrifying, but it was not at all what I expected. The team up there were really welcoming and friendly. The whole experience was a fantastic way to meet people from within the industry as well as other graduates who were keen to get into the industry as well. When I began the graduate programme I had no idea what to expect and I kind of went in there just wanting to give everything a go - and that’s the beauty of the programme, you pretty much get to rotate round all the different departments around the agencies. I particularly enjoyed my time working in digital where I began writing conversation calendars for one of our clients and ended up in the social media team.

Lucy Hartstone (2012 graduate)

“I was picked as one of the nine graduates in 2012 Clemenger Graduate Programme. My three month stint as a grad was great, I spent time at four different agencies; Raydar, .99, Porter Novelli and Colenso BBDO. The best part of the graduate programme was getting a taste of the diverse range of agencies from the below the line agency to the fast paced production machine that is .99 to public relations. I am now an account executive at Colenso BBDO where I work on the Fonterra account across brands such as Anchor, Mainland and Tip Top. Working at Colenso BBDO is fun and always interesting. The best part of the job is working with inspiring people that push the boundaries on everyday expectations. So if you are someone who lives to be challenged and inspired, advertising within the Clemenger Group might be right up your alley.” Lucy is now a Senior Account Manager travelling around the world.

Rachel Dymond (2012 graduate)

“The Clemenger Grad Programme exposed me to areas of advertising and communications that a standard entry level job would fall short of. The best thing is having the opportunity to work on a daily basis with the best in the business and do exciting work. The worst (but also best) is being thrown in the deep end and just attempting to tread water – no better way to learn. Each day is a new challenge, but it's a thrill getting through to the other side. The Clemenger Grad Programme was the best thing that could have happened to me coming fresh out of Uni, I'm so glad I had the balls to apply”. Rachel is now an Account Manager at Havas Worldwide London.

Kelly-Ann Barrett (2012 graduate)

"The Clemenger Graduate Programme is such an amazing opportunity for a graduate. It is a great way to enter into such a fast paced industry and to have others to share the experience with! The three-month rotation offers such great insights into each department and is a great way to meet and work with everyone in the agency. I loved my placement in every different department with no clear favourite, as each offered its own experiences and insight. Working in advertising, no day is ever the same, it's always full of new and exciting things, from briefing the digital team to create online banners, to writing a Facebook conversation calendar, to briefing design on a new project, to going for a ride in a new Toyota sports car, to free concert tickets, the list goes on! I currently work on Toyota and Radio New Zealand, and love working on these accounts and my team. Being across two accounts means I get extra variety in my day. We are working on a Toyota 86 campaign at the moment, work is very busy and exciting!" Kelly-Ann is now an Account Manager in Wellington.

Eloise Jack (2011 graduate)

“The Clemenger Grad Programme is the most enlightening, exciting, and frightening thing that I've ever done. It was an invaluable crash course in all things advertising - from writing briefs and giving presentations, to going on shoots and meeting clients. The amount of people you encounter and the number of things you learn in just 3 months makes for a sometimes exhausting, but always exhilarating ride!” Eloise went from an Account Manager to Creative and is now en route to London.

Bethany Omeri (2011 graduate)

"I so enjoyed the first year of the Graduate Programme, it's scary and exciting as you're in a state of constant change for the first three months, but it's totally unique in that you get to see what happens in every department. You are able to see things from all perspectives. It's so much better than going into an agency and being trained in one area, whatever area you end up in, you can do your job better if you know what everyone else is going through. I felt like they really invested in us - they let us go along to shoots, sit in on interesting meetings, and got us involved in a variety of projects straight away. We were given a great deal of trust and responsibility very quickly which was the best way to learn. They want you to be good at your job and they put everything in place to make sure that you can be." Bethany is now an Account Manager and is attending Leadership Programme.

If you are one of our successful graduates, you will have the chance of a lifetime to learn from the best. You will be given a unique opportunity to rotate through different agencies and departments before working in one area where you can shine the brightest.

The Clemenger Graduate Programme runs in both Wellington and Auckland. We usually have about four different agencies participating in the programme and each of those agencies will have anywhere from one to five graduate positions they want to fill. Ours is a nine month programme which starts in February each year.

If you are selected by one of our participating agencies for the programme, we will employ you on a nine month, fixed term employment agreement and pay you an entry-level salary for the duration of the programme. Plus, you receive two paid days off to attend your graduation ceremony. You will spend the first three months rotating through different agencies and departments to get an understanding of the various aspects of the marketing communications industry. This rotation period is a unique opportunity and sets our programme apart from others.  After the rotation period, you’ll be given a six-month placement in the agency which employs you, in an area where you can excel. Along the way you’ll have buddies and managers to support your success.

While there is no guarantee of a permanent job at the end of the programme, it is our clear expectation that you will land your dream role and have the job of a lifetime with us.

Overview

Entry Criteria

  • You must be either NZ or Australian citizen or resident. No exceptions.
  • We welcome applications from graduates of all disciplines.
  • You must have finished your university degree January 2018 and provide proof of completion.

How it Works

Throughout the nine month programme you will be paid an entry level salary. It is not a lot, but it is an opportunity to be paid to learn and build a strong career foundation. At the end of it, our hope is that we will offer you the job of a lifetime.

The nine month programme starts in February and runs to October, each year.

We take online applications 15th May - 19th of June 2017

Overview

Overview

Overview

Overview

Overview
