Working With Us

Our Organisation in New Zealand

Across New Zealand, we are spread across 5 offices in major cities and regional centres. In Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch, we draw on our diverse range of services to bring projects to life in the cities, communities and places that connect us, the industries that support us and the major infrastructure that moves us across New Zealand, Australia, and the world.

Meet Our CEO

When I first joined AECOM over 20 years ago, I didn’t see myself as one day being Chief Executive. The fact I am today, however – leading a 3500-strong team of engineers, designers, planners, economists, scientists and program managers – shows the opportunities available to you when you’re a member of the AECOM team.

My first role with AECOM was working as a planner on a major port expansion and redevelopment project. I was part of a multi-disciplinary team and learned so much every day. It formed the beginning of making enduring connections with many AECOM colleagues across Australia and New Zealand, learning the importance of working collaboratively, and of the many directions a career with AECOM can take you.

After years of study, I’m sure you’re determined to make that big leap into your chosen career, to work with people you can learn from while forging your own path, whatever that might be.

At AECOM, graduates are critical to our success. The fresh ideas, thinking and perspectives they bring to our diverse and evolving business are invaluable.

Our team is dedicated to providing our graduates with opportunities to learn new skills, to work with experienced colleagues and to make a positive impact to communities near and far.

Every day, I’m amazed to learn of the challenges we solve for our clients, and the lives we’re shaping and influencing through our work.

It’s these exciting challenges that have seen me build my career here, and which make AECOM an exciting and rewarding place to start your career.

Our Graduate Programme

Our Growing Professional Skills graduate program is designed to help you bridge the gap between formal education and the workplace. As part of the program, we work with you to develop a plan, set your goals, and the actions required to achieve them.

Our three year program is designed to set you up for success. We not only provide technical training and access to experts in the industry, but training in soft skills in line with our focus on effective communication, Client Service and building agility and resilience.

There are many opportunities for gaining exposure or experience on different projects, in different locations and with different teams. We are seeking graduates who want to try new things and expand their skills and knowledge. There are opportunities for rotations during the program, as well as opportunities once you have completed the program to apply for our Asia Pacific Exchange program where you can gain 12 months experience in one of our offices across Asia Pacific.

Our Graduates

Marc Marquez - Graduate Power Systems Engineer, Auckland

Coming from a small island in the Philippines, AECOM through its graduate program has given me the chance to pursue my passion on power system protection. With some help from the protection experts here in New Zealand, I am currently working on a protection study for one of the islands in the Pacific. With AECOM's wide business network, I've never been more involved in the development of the Asia-Pacific region as I am now.

Peter Ko - Graduate Engineer - Transportation

I grew up in Christchurch and was unfortunate enough to suffer through major earthquakes, which left the city in rubbles. However, since working with AECOM, I’ve had many opportunities to get involved with the rebuild projects and help the city thrive once again.

I first began working for AECOM as a summer intern and was offered a graduate position when I finished my undergraduate degree in civil engineering. One of AECOM’s many strengths is its global presence - I believe this will provide me with many opportunities to work abroad and gain international experiences.

Sanaz Irannejad, Graduate Electrical Engineer, Perth

AECOM is the place for me to realise my dreams. It is a global business with trusted consultative relationships with clients from a broad range of industries. We deliver quality work, and since joining the firm I have been proud to help deliver the 1 William Street project in Brisbane, an impressive building that stands out on the city’s skyline.

I am an advocate of the Growing Professional Skills (GPS) program and am an active member of the committee, having taken on the role of Learning & Development Coordinator. I also ran the presentation for the 2017 AECOM graduate intake at University of Western Australia and Curtin University in Perth.

I’m passionate about client service and want to grow our business by building relationships with our clients. There are many opportunities for training and I’m working on improving my leadership skills, increasing my responsibilities and familiarising myself with the end markets our business operates in. My long-term career goal is to be part of AECOM’s leadership team!

Career Pathways

Todd Battley – Regional Managing Director (Northern Western Australia)

I began my career with AECOM in Townsville as a Graduate Civil Engineer.

Over the years I’ve seen our company constantly evolve - including through multiple mergers and acquisitions - but it’s been this constant change that has brought opportunity. Our organisation is not hierarchical, so saying “yes” to different opportunities has definitely given me chances to advance my career.

During my time with AECOM I have worked in Townsville, Mount Isa, Brisbane and on multiple site locations, which has given me a decent overview of our Queensland business. I gained experience in our roads team, before moving into Environment. I was part of the newly created planning advisory team and led our Aviation offering for many years.

Developing relationships with clients and colleagues has long been a passion of mine. Throughout my career, I’ve actively sought mentors and sponsors to help my development, and I’ve tried to learn as much about client service, quality and people skills from these positive influencers. These colleagues – and friends – have all played a huge part in helping me achieve what I have to date.

It took 10 years with the business before I had my first taste of team leadership as the head of Environment. After a merger, I spent some time back “on the tools” for a short time, which kept me connected to my technical roots.

I feel privileged to now lead our Northern Western Australia (NWA) business as Regional Managing Director (RMD).

My advice to graduates and new starters would be to ‘have a go’ and do your best on each and every task you are assigned. It isn’t always the shiny projects that give you the most valuable experience, so don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty, and embrace working as part of a team – it’s in the midst of a demanding project where you’ll learn the most, while building long-lasting professional relationships.

My story is just that – mine. No two careers are the same, and one of the great things about AECOM is that you’re in control of your career; whatever your skillset and whatever your passions are, there’s support available to set – and achieve – your goals.

Our Interns

Dario Bauer
Structural Engineering Intern, Auckland, NZ

Within days of starting at AECOM, I was entrusted with exciting, billable work. I had already become a valued member of my project team.

The opportunity to collaborate with other departments and contractors allowed me to experience the whole scope of a project, as well as undertake varied and thrilling work. Some of these tasks were challenging, but with the support provided by my colleagues, as well as approachable senior engineers, I was able to do my part in producing the best solutions for our clients.

Ella Matuschka
Undergraduate Engineer, Auckland, NZ

Working with AECOM over the past two years, I have been provided an opportunity to learn and develop my technical skills through applying them directly to ‘live’ projects.

My manager and fellow team members have been extremely encouraging, allowing me to develop my skills in a supportive environment. Everyone is approachable and willing to take the time to explain tasks thoroughly so we can work through issues together.

My experience with AECOM has been very positive. I would welcome the opportunity to work in a graduate position as I can see it would be extremely valuable to my career development.

Theodore Carlos
Engineering Summer Student, Auckland, NZ

AECOM provides a team environment that utilises my existing skills and seeks to develop them further. I’ve gained exposure to the associated fields in structural engineering – my chosen career path - and experienced what it is like to be part of a global network of industry experts and professionals.

My team leader has ensured my desk is always full with work that offers broad learning experiences and challenges my developing capabilities. This has enabled me to build on my strengths and take giant steps towards achieving my ambition of becoming a professional engineer.

Holly Atkins
Engineering Summer Student, Auckland, NZ

I’m currently a third year student studying Urban Planning (hons) at The University of Auckland and have been working with AECOM’s Transportation team (Highways and Bridges) as an Engineering Summer Student.

The Transportation team is multi-disciplinary, which is attractive from a development perspective as it allows me to learn from experienced professionals with diverse skill sets and backgrounds. No two tasks are ever the same and I get to work on a range of projects in different areas. Each day I come to work I am broadening my understanding of how various disciplines operate, am challenged by my colleagues and, ultimately, am working towards what is shaping as a very rewarding engineering career.
